My research about King James I

Background information about King James I:
His thoughts about witchcraft:
- King James I was profoundly known for his fear of witches and witchcraft.
- He was so terrified that he advocated a book about witches (how to detect witches)
- He also ordered the Pendle Witches to be executed and hanged, in August 1612.

His thoughts about the regicidal intrigue:
- Nov 5th, 1605, Guy Fawkes plotted to assassinate King James I (because the Roman Catholic group felt like their “catholism” has been taken away by King James) but failed.
- After attempt of murder, King James was more aware and more alarmed with his surroundings.
- King James I was very traumatized afterwards...

His thoughts about the divine rights of kings:
- divine rights of kings= a concept that states.. God is the only just being who can give the right to a king to rule (over a nation).
- King James I was known to be a supporter of the divine rights of kings.
- He was a Protestant who was an advocate of this concept.
 * This was why the Roman Catholic group tried to assassinate King James. (He was a Protestant who did not support the concept the Catholics had, so he has been faced with hatred by the Catholics)

Does these elements appear in Macbeth?
Yes.
- the three witches= witchcraft
   > King James I would have been frustrated and scared while watching the play
- The death of Duncan= the regicidal intrigue.
- Macbeth opposed to the divine rights of kings.. He made his way to the throne by committing a crime.

Why did Shakespeare included these elements in the play?
- Cinematic
- Shakespeare himself  also opposed to witchcraft
   > the witches were not trustworthy in his play.. this shows that he does not like witchcraft at all.
- Shakespeare might’ve wanted to tell us to be aware of our surroundings by showing that anyone can harm you anytime (Duncan trusted Macbeth)
   > After the Gunpowder plot, King James was more aware of his surroundings. Shakespeare kind of encouraged King James to be more alert with his surroundings.
- Shakespeare might have wanted to show that we should do everything in God’s way, not our own.
    >  Macbeth opposed to the divine rights of kings and murdered Duncan, so his outcome of doing so was death.
